Polishing Up on Porcelain Veneers
The invention of porcelain veneers is a relatively new one. Only being introduced in the 1980s, these tooth restorers are in a league of their own. A veneer is a layer of material that is placed over a tooths surface to improve the aesthetics of the tooth or to protect a tooth that is damaged. There are two types of material that are used for veneers, composite and porcelain. A composite veneer can be directly built up into the mouth, and porcelain ones are bonded to the tooth using a substance like cement.
Veneers are a very popular solution for damage repair for a lot of reasons. One reason is that it requires little to no preparation, such as drilling. Another plus is that the procedure requires little or no anesthetic. Composite veneers are popular because they are easy to repair. Treatment is usually fairly non invasive and relatively done in a short amount of time. The laboratory time needed to construct these smile savers is about one week. Porcelain veneers are usually more durable and less likely to discolor and stain than composite veneers. The material is very strong when it comes to crushing things, but is not as great in tensile strength. Tensile strength is the measure of stress put on a material at its breaking point. The ceramic used in these veneers is very similar to natural teeth in texture, translucence, and color.
Even though a veneer made from porcelain has its benefits, it also has a few disadvantages. During the time in between the preparation visit with the dentist and the visit where the veneers are applied, some people complain of increased tooth sensitivity, especially to hot and cold, which can be extremely uncomfortable. Even with the greatest of care, they do not last forever. At most, these veneers will last 10 15 years, after which time they must be replaced. The veneer is not indestructible, so care should be taken not to bite down into hard substances. Wearers have to also be careful not to partake in the basic general dentistry no nos: No biting nails, no grinding or gritting teeth, no chewing on pencils. Avoiding these bad habits may help with keeping money in the persons pocket, because depending on the geographical area of the dentist, the clients oral situation, and the difficulty with the case, the cost can range anywhere from only $200 upwards to $2000 or more PER veneer!
Porcelain veneers are such a versatile invention that it can almost be ranked as a dental cure all..almost. Being the cure for gaps in teeth, discolorations, chips, and broken teeth, despite a few drawbacks, they are a great way to attain an absolutely perfect smile.
